Nigeria family disown terror suspect

Members of Berende family of Ile Eleran at Eruda tuntun, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Friday, disowned a terror suspect, Abdullahi Berende, who claimed to be a member of the family.
50-year-old Abdullahi and two others, Sulaiman Saka and Saheed Adewunmi were accused by the State Security Service of operating an Iranian terror cell and also gathering information about Isrealis and Americans living in Nigeria.
When our correspondent visited the Berende family on Friday, all the members of the family denied knowing the suspect.
Two women, Mrs. Fumilayo Berende and Mrs. Bilkis Berende, who said they were in their 70s, insisted there was no such name in their family.
An elderly member of the family who identified himself as Garuba, also denied knowing the terror suspect.
Garuba said, “We do not know anybody by that name.  We have many members of Berende family but none of them is Abdullahi and none of them has been accused of any misconduct.”
The University of Ilorin, where Berende claimed to be a master’s degree student did not confirm or deny Berende’s claim.
UNILORIN’s Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr.  Kunle Akogun in an interview with our correspondent on Friday, said the officials of the varsity were still cross-checking the records to ascertain the suspect’s status.
“We cannot confirm whether Berende  is a registered student here or not. We are still checking our records,” Akogun said.
Meanwhile the Chairman, Committee of Muslim Organisation, Kwara State, Prof. Shehu Jimoh, has said the involvement of Abdullahi in terrorist activities was condemnable.
He stated that Islam abhorred terrorism and wondered why a Muslim scholar would engage in terrorism.
Jimoh said, “It is un-Islamic, unethical and unfair to this country that any reasonable Muslim particularly from Ilorin, would get involved in a terror act, whether he is being paid or not. This is most unfortunate.
“I think the  act should be condemned in its totality. Kwara has enjoyed peace and anybody that will contribute to insecurity in the country should be condemned.”
Abdullahi was paraded by the SSS along Saka and Adewunmi on Wednesday by the Deputy Director, Public Relations, SSS, Marilyn Ogar.
Abdullahi, a leader of the Shiite sect, was accused of making suspicious trips to and fro Iran where he interacted with some Iranians known to operate a high-profile international terrorist network.
Ogar said, “Berende confessed that he was recruited by some Iranian elements when he returned to Iran for further studies in 2011 and was subsequently trained in the use of AK47 assault rifle, pistols, production and detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices and after he returned to Nigeria, he was invited by his handlers at Dubai for further briefing in April 2012. He was tasked to establish a terrorist cell in the South-Western part of Nigeria with particular emphasis on Lagos.”
She added that the Iranian sponsors requested Abdullahi to identify and gather intelligence on public places and prominent hotels frequented by Israelis and Americans in Western Nigeria.
Abdullahi who was said to have confessed to receiving money running into millions of naira had allegedly relocated from Ilorin to Lagos to commence terrorist activities.

Man accused of buying human hair escapes lynching

What exactly will make a man go from a salon to salon collecting people’s hair in exchange for money?
This is a question that only a 60-year-old man, Adewale Okunade, a landlord of a house on Segun Olatunji Street, Ijoko, Ota, Ogun State, has its answer.
Okunade, who hails from Oyo State, narrowly escaped being lynched on Thursday when some people in the neighbourhood pounced on him.
They alleged that the hair was being taken to an herbalist in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, who uses it to prepare charms for him.
Some people said they found Okunade’s behaviour bizarre, insisting that there was more to his action.
It was gathered that the man had been in the business for some years but nemesis caught up with him on the fateful day when his ‘business partner’, a bricklayer, gave him away.
An executive member of the Community Development Association said Okunade allegedly confessed that he had been buying human hair.
According to the CDA executive, the victim said he had been using the hair to cure himself of festering sores on his leg.
He said the suspect denied the hair was meant for rituals, saying he used to take the hair to an herbalist to prepare concoctions for his sores.
He said many traditional medicine practitioners who were there when Okunade was apprehended, said human hair could only be used for rituals not for curing sores.
He said, “The suspect’s partner had gone to a barber in their neighbourhood to buy some hair. The barber, however, refused. The suspect sent his partner to go to the barber’s apprentice.
“When they got to the apprentice, he agreed, but unknown to them that the barber was monitoring their movement. The barber decided to lay ambush for them.
“When he (barber) saw them with a cellophane bag, he raised the alarm and many people in the neighbourhood were drawn to the scene. By the time they checked the contents in the bag, they saw plenty of human hair.
“That was how the community pounced on his partner and started questioning him about the source of the hair. It was in the course of that the partner said it was Okunade who sent him.
“The people moved to Okunade’s house but he was not around. When he came back and people related the incident to him, he left the community the following day.
“By the time he came back, he thought the residents would have forgotten about the incident, but when they saw him, they mobbed him. It was then he explained that he had sores on his leg that refused to heal and that he had been curing them with concoction mixed with human hair.
“The community, not satisfied with his explanation, decided to hand him over to the police at Sango Police Station.”
Another resident, who craved anonymity, said, “We have yet to come to terms with his pedestrian explanation. As for us, he is not saying the whole truth.
“We learnt that he pays between N200,000 and N300,000 for each consignment of hair. You can see that his explanation lacks the essential elements of truth. I am also amazed that human hair has become a cure for sores.”
The spokesman for Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said the story was twisted by the community.
He said the suspect had only solicited for hair because of his festering sores.
Adejobi said, “The story was not like that. The man (Okunade) has a sore and he said he needed human hair to cure the sore. He had not gotten the hair; he only solicited. The community just raised the alarm which resulted in the man’s car being vandalised.
“He reported to the police that his car was being vandalised and that they wanted to kill him. That was how the police mediated to avoid the man being lynched.”

UNILAG secret cult members arrested

One of the four suspected cultists arrested during the recently-concluded Convocation Week at the University of Lagos, Akoka, has been identified as Opeyemi Odusanya.
He is a self-employed surveyor resident in Ikorodu.
Odusanya was apprehended at the second gate of UNILAG premises on the opening day of the school’s convocation.
This was shortly after gunshots were heard around the Faculty of Education about 3.30pm.
Police sources said that Odusanya, prior to his arrest, had robbed an ice cream vendor of N6000 around the Faculty of Education.
A reliable source said, “Odusanya was once a student of the school until it was discovered that his admission into the institution was irregular. He dropped out in 2012 and went into land surveying.”
It had earlier been reported about the arrest of three UNILAG students and a fourth unidentified suspect on the school premises for their alleged cult activities.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, had on Monday confirmed Odusanya’s arrest by the Sabo Police Division.
“The fourth suspect was arrested by the Sabo Police Division and was later transferred to SARS. Investigation is still ongoing,” Braide said.

MEET THE NEW ACADEMIC WIZKID - Adenuga Jnr

The dictionary meaning of WHIZ KID is  a young, exceptionally talented and successful person in a field of activity". These adjectives have been achieved by the Nigerian talented musical star, WIZKID, which unfortunately we are not talking about in this occassion, but about a new academic "Wizkid" on the block, by the name ADENUGA.
In this report, Segun Olugbile highlights the achievements of a 16-year-old Nigerian pupil called ADENUGA who made 4A*s and 2As in the last International General School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University
Sixteen-year-old Adenuga Victoria brilliant boy. It is unfair to deny him an accolade like this. And arguably, the teenager could be the best Nigerian candidate that sat for the 2012 University of Cambridge International General School Certificate Examination.
The boy, who is the Senior Prefect of Doregos Private Academy, Lagos, registered for six subjects and cleared all his papers. This he did in style – securing four A*s and two As in the examination that involved pupils from about 150 nations of the world. The SS3 pupil obtained A* in English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and As in Mathematics and Additional Mathematics.
With this result, Adenuga is qualified to study any science-related course in any university in the world. Several universities abroad are already wooing him with scholarships. He has also been named the Dorego Academy Ambassador.
While the boy, whose father is a pastor, aspires to study medicine, he said he would just read medicine for its sake, as he intends to end up on the pulpit just like his father, Apostle Paul Adenuga, the General Overseer of Faith Revival Apostolic Church, Idimu, Lagos. Boy Adenuga also says Billy Graham, an American Christian evangelist, is his role model. Graham is notable for having been a spiritual adviser to several United States Presidents, including Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon.
Adenuga was the cynosure of all eyes during the prize-giving day of the school last Saturday. He was the first pupil of the institution to have put up such a spectacular performance at the Cambridge’s IGSCE since the academy started presenting pupils for the examination 10 years ago. The pupil that held the record before Adenuga shattered it was Aishat Abdulrasak, who, in 2007, had three As and three Bs in the examination. Aishat is now a medical student at the University of Lagos.
Speaking with newsmen after he received his award and prizes from the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Duro Aina, Adenuga said he was overwhelmed the day the school Principal, Mr. Oluyemi Faleke, announced the results on the school assembly ground.
Giving God the glory for his performance, the boy, who was accompanied to the award ceremony by his parents, Adenuga (senior) and Elizabeth, said though he prepared well for the examination, it was God that crowned his efforts with success.
“Before the exams, our teacher prepared us well and I prayed to God to see me through. What I learnt in my JSS days also guided me in that exam and my parents also supported me academically and spiritually,” he added.
Adenuga said he had been nursing the ambition of coming top in any examination that he would participate in. But is his life in school all about books? Faleke and some of his classmates said no.
“He loves football. He is a member of the school team and he is also a member of the athletic team. He runs well and supports Manchester United in the English Premier League,” one of his friends, who simply identified himself as Dayo, said.
Speaking on his role models, Adenuga said, “My dad is my role model, I want to become an apostle like him but I want to study medicine if God says. But I also love Billy Graham, he is also my role model, he is a well respected man of God. I follow him diligently by listening to his sermons and I read a lot about him on the Internet. Graham, now 94, has successfully converted more than 3.2 million people to Christianity worldwide with an estimated lifetime audience including radio and television broadcasts of 2.2 billion. I want to be like him,” he said.
Faleke described the brainy teenager as a genius, adding that in the last 23 years of the school’s history, no pupil had ever recorded Adenuga’s feats either in academics, in sports or leadership ability.
“Cambridge GCE is written in almost 150 countries in the world and in Nigeria here it is a dreaded examination only written by brilliant pupils. It is conducted by the British Council and this year we presented 10 candidates, with Adenuga scoring between 80 and above 90 in the six subjects.
“The other nine candidates we presented also performed very well but his own performance is amazing. We are even waiting for Cambridge to get the breakdown of this year’s results but I can easily guess that hardly could anyone in Nigeria record this kind of intimidating success.
“The boy is indescribable. His calmness usually hides his qualities because whether in classroom or outside, he always has something extra to give. When I saw him during one of our inter-house sports games and he was running like an antelope I was amazed. He has won us many trophies and he is the school’s senior prefect. I wonder where his inspiration comes from.”
The principal predicted that Adenuga would make nine A1s in the 2013 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination and the National Examination Council’s certificate examination.
“I will not be surprised if he had A1 in all his subjects in the WASSCE and NECO examinations because he is exceptionally brilliant,” Faleke added.
The boy’s father, however, advised parents never to abdicate their responsibilities in the upbringing of their children.
“We thank God for using his performance as a source of encouragement to us and to prove to us once again that He is faithful to His servants. I will, however, implore parents against abandoning their responsibilities to teachers. The upbringing of a child is a collective responsibility of both the parent and the teacher and should not be left alone for the teachers, parents must contribute their own quota too,” he said.
The mother, Elizabeth, said her boy had shown from his primary school days that he would excel academically and spiritually in life.
Other pupils honoured and presented with prizes at the occasion include Adebola Duro-Aina, Bruce Gbolahan and Pelumi Folarin for distinguishing themselves during the last academic year.www.notjustok.co.uk

Zimbabwe police clampdown Valentine's Day marchers, 25 injured

A women's activism group says Zimbabwean police used tear gas and baton charged to disperse Valentine's Day marchers, herding 195 people into a police precinct. Twenty-five were later treated for injuries, including broken teeth.
The Women of Zimbabwe Arise leader Jenni Williams said Friday all but one - accused of indecent exposure - were released without charge.
The group traditionally marks Valentine's Day with marches in Harare and Bulawayo giving out red roses as a symbol of peace and love in the troubled nation.
Williams said protesters marched to government buildings to peacefully voice concerns on flaws in a proposed new constitution over women's rights.
Amnesty International, in a statement, said continuing attacks by police on Zimbabwean human rights defenders cast doubt on the country's ability to hold credible polls.

Truck crushes 15-year-old pupil while on teacher’s errand

Tragedy struck in front of Lafenwa Comprehensive High School, Ota, Ogun State, last Thursday, when a 15-year-old pupil, Miss Kemi Obanla, was crushed to death by a truck driver.
It was learnt that Kemi was killed while running errands for her class teacher.
It was alleged that the teacher had asked Kemi to go and buy cooked ‘ofada’ rice for her around 10am on the day.
An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said the SS1 pupil was knocked down by a truck while crossing the road.
He said Kemi died while she was being rushed to the hospital.
“The girl was knocked down when she was crossing the road. After hitting her, the driver of the vehicle attempted to escape but the youths around apprehended him.
“It was when the girl was being taken to the hospital that she died. When we inquired where she was going at that time, we were told her teacher, whose name was not given, sent her to buy ofada rice for her.”
The father of the deceased, Mr. Peter Obanla, said the death of his daughter, dealt a devastating blow to the family.
He said when the girl left their Ajegunle Close, off Mefun Road, Ota, home, she was full of life.
Obanla said about two hours after his daughter left for school, someone informed him that she was involved in a fatal accident.
He said, “The accident happened on Ahmaddiya Road, Ota. By the time I got there, I learnt that they had taken her to an hospital. She died on the way to the hospital.
“Since then, we are yet to come to terms with the fact that that she is dead. I still cannot believe it. Kemi was very industrious, respectful and brilliant. Her death has dealt a blow to us.”
Obanla, who works with Dangote Group of Companies as a driver in Ibeshe Plant, said the school was shielding the teacher.
“It is only the Principal of the school that has been showing up. We do not know the teacher that sent my daughter on an errand. Though many teachers from the school have been coming to our house, we do not know who among them sent her on errand on that fateful day.
“The driver that killed her and the school authorities have been begging me to drop the case. They said what happened was the will of God.”
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, Ogun Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, promised to get the details of the incident.
However, as of the time of going to the press, he did not get back to our correspondent.
Subsequent efforts to speak with him were not successful as his phone rang out many times without him picking it.
